MN HEalth care roundtable
The Minnesota Health Care Roundtable is a semi-annual conference that examines topics affecting the evolution of health care policy. Hosted by Minnesota Physician Publishing, we assemble a panel of between six and eight different stakeholder group perspectives and present a moderated discussion in front of a live audience. Through a three-phase curriculum development process, panelists are involved with co-creating the conference themes. The events generate a nine-page report, published in Minnesota Physician and posted online.
Current ROUNDTABLE
Published in the May 2023 edition
Background and objectives:
Prior to the pandemic, it was widely recognized there were serious workforce shortage issues facing health care delivery. Those concerns are now much worse. From physicians, to nurses, to behavioral health, to public health, to assisted living and long term care, every kind of licensed health care professional faces demand that far outstrips supply. This problem is trending steeply upward and can only manifest in serious negative outcomes. Lack of access creates higher cost, preventable increases in morbidity and mortality and systemic burnout.
Our expert panel will examine the root causes of the health care workforce shortage. From industry entrance barriers, to workplace dysfunction, to career satisfaction we will present examples and potential solutions. We will dissect the complex interactions between elements of health care governance and explore how industry sectors can work together more closely to solve shared problems. We will explore the numerous initiatives already underway to address these issues and share suggestions for how best to address them.
UPCOMING ROUNDTABLE
Publishing in the November 2023 edition
Background and objectives:
As health care faces rising costs, chronic workforce shortages and seemingly ever increasing administrative burdens, the pace of evolution is unparalleled. One example is the emergence of care teams; many different licensed and unlicensed providers working together to the top of their training. While this offers benefits it also creates new challenges. The two most critical are ensuring every provider is aware of the care a patient receives and the patient is aware of, and adheres to, his or her individual treatment plan. The complexities of these task have given rise to a new part of the care team, the care coordinator.
Our panel will examine the role of the care coordinator, how and why it is becoming an increasingly important part of health care delivery. When care coordination may be provided by clinic or health system staff, by third party payers, by private industry contracting out-of state employees, and even by state health agencies, utilization of this tool can present conflicts, confusion and frustration. We will look at the different aspects of care coordination and provide insight into how they work best in various practice settings.
